Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth radicalization is a critical concern in many parts of the world, particularly in regions facing socio-political instability and economic hardships. Nguru Local Government Area in Yobe State, located in the northeastern part of Nigeria, has experienced challenges related to youth radicalization, often exacerbated by external influences from social media platforms (Ogunbiyi & Musa, 2023). The increasing penetration of smartphones and internet access has significantly changed how young people in Nguru engage with information and ideas. While social media has many positive aspects, including education and communication, it has also become a tool for spreading extremist ideologies and radicalizing vulnerable youth. This study aims to investigate how social media platforms contribute to youth radicalization in Nguru, focusing on the role of online content, interactions, and networks in shaping youth attitudes and behaviors.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the numerous advantages of social media in promoting awareness and social interaction, its negative impact on youth radicalization in parts of Nigeria is alarming. In Nguru, the growing use of social media by youth has raised concerns about its potential role in encouraging radical views, extremism, and even violence. The problem lies in the ease with which extremist ideologies can be disseminated through online platforms, where youth, especially those vulnerable due to socio-economic pressures, may become exposed to dangerous content. This study seeks to explore the extent to which social media contributes to radicalization in Nguru, identifying the key factors and processes that may be fostering this trend among local youth.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the role of social media in promoting youth radicalization in Nguru.
  2. To examine the types of content that influence youth radicalization on social media in Nguru.
  3. To assess the relationship between social media usage patterns and radicalization among youth in Nguru.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does social media contribute to youth radicalization in Nguru?
  2. What types of social media content are most influential in shaping radical ideologies among youth in Nguru?
  3. How do youth engagement patterns with social media correlate with their radicalization?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Social media significantly contributes to youth radicalization in Nguru.
  2. Certain types of social media content are more likely to promote radicalization among youth in Nguru.
  3. The more youth in Nguru engage with extremist content on social media, the more likely they are to adopt radical views.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is crucial for understanding the role of social media in youth radicalization and its implications for national security and social stability in Nigeria. By identifying the specific ways in which social media influences radicalization, the findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and media regulators in developing strategies to counteract this threat. Additionally, the study will inform the design of more targeted social media literacy programs aimed at empowering youth to critically engage with online content.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Nguru Local Government Area, Yobe State, and focuses on the role of social media in youth radicalization. It is constrained by the availability of reliable data on social media activities in the region, as well as potential challenges in accessing youth who may be directly involved in radicalized groups.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Youth Radicalization: The process by which young individuals adopt extreme political, social, or religious ideologies, often leading to violent or disruptive actions.
  2. Social Media: Online platforms and tools that allow users to create, share, and interact with content, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
  3. Extremist Content: Material shared on social media that promotes violent, discriminatory, or extremist ideologies, often with the goal of recruiting or radicalizing others.
